Mennekes charge spots can be integrated in eMobility Solution
Open system interfaces promote the development of e-mobility
Waiblingen /Kirchhundem - Bosch Software Innovations GmbH and Mennekes Elektrotechnik GmbH & Co KG have signed an agreement sealing their cooperation on charging infrastructure systems for electric and hybrid vehicles. The two companies will combine their expertise in their respective specialist areas, with Mennekes contributing its global-market-proven plug systems and expertise in the design of charge spots, and the Bosch Group’s software and system engineering experts contributing an open-interface, IT-based system for the networking and management of charging infrastructures and various types of charge spots. This includes configuring and managing charge spots, vehicles and value-added services around e-mobility, in collaboration with fleet operators and other users. “This cooperation agreement with Mennekes is a prime example of the way in which we are looking to work with partners to develop all-round solutions for this emerging market,” says Heinz Derenbach, the president of Bosch Software Innovations GmbH. “It is a major step forward for both companies that will enable us to profit from opportunities for growth on the global market and at the same time enables us to offer customers an excellent all-round package of services”, adds Volker Lazzaro, managing director of MENNEKES Elektrotechnik GmbH & Co. KG.
Mennekes has already installed several hundred charge spots throughout Germany in various projects. Mennekes charge spots form part of the Smart Wheels project in Aachen and 250 of the company’s charge spots are in operation in the e-mobility model region of Hamburg. Germany’s first car-sharing project for electric vehicles, Car2go in Ulm, also relies on a network of some 50 Mennekes charge spots. Many other projects launched over the past two years have demonstrated the successful use of Mennekes charge spots and related connector products.
The Mennekes product portfolio encompasses a range of charge spots for public and private use, including satellite systems in which a number of free-standing or wall-mounted charge spots are supplied with power from a central grid connection. The charge spots are equipped with all necessary metering, monitoring, and communication functions for their integration in smart grid solutions. They are very easy to operate because all controls are located on the socket panels, which have an integrated display providing clear user guidance.
Bosch Software Innovations launched an e-mobility infrastructure in Singapore last summer. It is now being expanded to provide wider coverage of the city-state. By the end of this year, drivers of electric vehicles will have access to a network of 40 charge spots for “refueling”. Similar projects are under way in Germany and other European countries, enabling users to benefit from the advantages of e-mobility on a daily basis. These infrastructures are constructed around the internet-based eMobility Solution platform. Dedicated portals offer drivers additional services such as a location-finder for vacant charging stations, which can be very useful in conurbations, where parking space and thus space for charge spots is limited.
The eMobility Solution is designed to be open and flexible, so that additional business models and value-added services can be integrated, such as the option for drivers to reserve power from renewable sources at the corresponding “eco-rates” or plan routes including alternative forms of transportation. It can easily be adapted to existing information and energy networks, allowing an e-mobility network to be tailored to the existing infrastructure in a given city. The service platform was specifically designed to be open enough to allow even competing companies to participate and other providers to integrate their charge spots. This approach deliberately encourages unrestricted competition for creative ideas relating to e-mobility, offering customers a broad range of services and a high level of information security at the same time.

Energy harvesting comes to the fore with electric vehicles because the price they pay for being environmental and exhibiting many performance advantages is that they have limited energy available. In and on these vehicles, the energy snatched from heat, light, movement and other sources may be milliwatts or less to drive wireless sensors and actuators, watts for self sufficient lighting clusters (still in development) or – the main focus – up to kilowatts to charge the traction battery or traction supercapacitor that provide motive energy to the electric traction motors.
Secondarily, the traction power storage may also provide other electricity needs such as hard wired lights, climate control and instruments. Reducing any of these loads is welcome. The traction battery of an on-road electric vehicle can be up to half of the total cost of the vehicle – another sensitive issue. If the battery is charged more often in various ways it can often be smaller and cheaper and weigh less – a virtuous circle. IDTechEx examines the use of energy harvesting to charge traction batteries in the new report Energy Harvesting for Electric Vehicles 2011-2021 .
In the past, there has been some contempt for the usually small amount of electricity that energy harvesting can provide for traction. For example the old idea of a small square photovoltaic panel on an electric car may increase range by only five kilometers. This misses four points.

Background
Over the next ten years, the Chinese government will invest more than Yuan 100bn (US$15bn) in subsidising the country’s industry and infrastructure for environmentally friendly and alternative fuel vehicles. Around Yuan 60bn will be invested in developing energy-saving technologies, with the remaining funds to be used for the creation of an infrastructure capable of supporting energy saving vehicles in certain cities. The Chinese car industry is maturing and follows other big manufacturers in their investment on electric mobility. The state supports this move by having set an official goal of 500,000 Chinese plug-in hybrids and electric cars produced by the end of 2011.
To facilitate this goal, China launches a nationwide programme to install large electric vehicle charging stations. China is on track to lead deployment of this infrastructure in the coming years.
According to MIIT Telematics has been listed as one of the major project in China during the 12th Five-Year Plan period. The future investing will foucs on automotive electronics, information and communication and software solutions. It is expected that total market value of China Telematics industry will be more than 10billion USD and China will be the largest market for telematics services. However the telematics segment in China is still far from fully developmed owing to the lack of industry involvement and integration. Especially, the progress of consumer telematics development is laggard in China.

Over the next decade, the most vibrant Wireless Power Transmission (WPT) markets will be the contactless charging of portable and mobile equipment, in particular consumer electronics and electric vehicles. This is the focus of a new IDTechEx report, “Wireless Power Transmission for Consumer Electronics and Electric Vehicles 2012-2022″ www.IDTechEx.com/WPT. In this article we share some of the research carried out for this report. It describes technologies that will be a stepping stone to contactless power for a high proportion of static consumer, industrial and military electronics and electrics. For now, it primarily concerns wireless charging of batteries in portable consumer electronics and in electric vehicles. Both travel considerable distances and ready availability of standard, convenient, contactless, charging capability are key to their further growth in adoption. For example, the user will enjoy ever greater functionality and longer hours of use of mobile phones despite the on-going shortcomings of their batteries.
Our research concerns transfer of watts up to high power of the order of kilowatts at ranges of about one millimeter to about 60 centimeters. The WPT of concern usually involves static transmitters and a larger number of receivers incorporated in what is usually portable or mobile equipment. The transmitters are usually hard wired to AC mains or energy harvesters such as photovoltaics, there being a trend towards multiple energy harvesting. It will only become a mass market if more comprehensive standards are widely adopted and the manufacturers of the portable and mobile equipment incorporate the receivers during manufacture. We forecast the demand by power level and consider other criteria such as technology, range and region of adoption.
The extreme inconvenience of the proliferation of electrically charged products each with an incompatible charging power supply, must be overcome. Three to four billion units are made every year – a potential market for wireless charging pairs of up to ten billion dollars yearly, given market growth and an allied market of wireless power to electronic and electric consumer products that do not need charging. Indeed, the massive disposal of non-standard external power supplies for consumer electronics is an environmental outrage of concern to governments. Only 15-20% by weight of electronic products including laptops, cell phones and their power supplies are recycled. A typical user of electronic devices now carries at least three different chargers and at least an equal number of cables for energy charging and data transfer functions. However, we all know about the cordless electric toothbrush and there is now a consumer demand to charge mobile devices wirelessly, eliminating most wiring.

This year, the world’s largest event on printed electronics, “printed Electronics USA” will reflect the widening government support for printed electronics. Beyond the burgeoning programs at universities and government research centers, this is particularly evident in military and electric vehicle work. The US Army reflects this in two presentations. One is an overview of materials printing capabilities and prototype development for US Army applications and the other concerns direct write approaches to nanoscale electronics.
Nowhere is the increased government support more in evidence than with electric vehicles by land, water and air, however. Governments and industry have committed $60 billion to electric vehicle programs in the last two years. New initiatives keep being announced for both hybrid and pure electric vehicles since, for unmanned aircraft, underwater and indoor vehicles we are in the age of the pure electric vehicle but for on and off-road vehicles, seagoing craft and manned aircraft we are in the age of the hybrid electric vehicle.
For example, US Energy Secretary Steven Chu recently announced more than $175 million over the next three to five years to accelerate the development and deployment of advanced vehicle technologies. The funding will support 40 projects across 15 states and will help improve the fuel efficiency of next generation vehicles. The projects will target new innovations throughout the vehicle, including better fuels and lubricants, lighter weight materials, longer-lasting and cheaper electric vehicle batteries and components, more efficient engine technologies, and more. This comprehensive approach to vehicle efficiency research and development will help ensure the technologies are available to help automakers achieve recently announced fuel efficiency standards.
The President announced historic fuel efficiency standards for cars and light trucks which will bring fuel efficiency to 54.5 miles per gallon by Model Year 2025 and which, combined with steps already taken by this administration, will save American families $1.7 trillion at the pump and reduce oil consumption by 12 billion barrels by 2025. The Administration then announced first-of-their-kind fuel-efficiency standards for work trucks, buses and other heavy-duty vehicles, which will save American businesses who operate and own these commercial vehicles approximately $50 billion in fuel costs over the life of the program mainly through hybrid electric vehicles.
“The Department of Energy is investing in new advanced technologies that will significantly improve vehicle fuel economy, save consumers money, and create skilled jobs for Americans,” said Secretary Chu. “Investments in the next generation of autos will strengthen our economy and lead to a more fuel-efficient, clean energy future.”

The Gujarat government might have created a climate change department and chief minister Narendra Modi might have scripted a book on climate change, but when it comes to sale of environment-friendly e-vehicles, the government has done little.
The whopping 14.5 % VAT on electric vehicles has applied brakes on promotion of these vehicles in the state.
All India, Gujarat’s VAT percentage on electric vehicles is highest. While Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana do not levy any tax on e-bikes and e-cars, Delhi even offers subsidy on such non-polluting vehicles.
Just because of high taxes, electric car, Mahindra Reva, is not sold in Gujarat. “The electric car which is sold in Delhi for around Rs3.5 lakh, is priced at around Rs5 lakh in Ahmedabad. Because of high taxes, this e-car is expensive by almost Rs1.5 lakh in Gujarat.
So we are not interested in selling the non-polluting car at this high price,” said Pavan Sachdeva, GM (marketing), Mahindra Reva.
According to him, Delhi not only levies zero VAT on such vehicles, it also gives subsidy to buyers. “So Reva is sold in the range of Rs2.8 lakh to Rs3.5 lakh there,” he said.
If VAT rate is brought down in Gujarat, the sale of non-polluting vehicles will get a boost in the state, which will also check the emission levels.
“The taxes on e-bikes are highest in Gujarat. This is a state where sale and use of such vehicles can be good, so if taxes are brought down, that will greatly help their promotion,” said CEO of Hero Electric, Naveen Munjal. For more than a year, the association of electric two-wheelers and four wheelers has been writing to Gujarat government for reducing the VAT rate. “If state government cannot make it tax free, then it can reduce VAT from 14.5% to at least 4%. But in spite of several letters, there is no response from the government,” said Sachdeva.
Some fear that the government is not bringing down the VAT as it is afraid that other automobile companies may start demanding relief in taxes. “When we approached the government to reduce VAT on e-bikes, the answer we got was ‘other two-wheeler manufacturers would demand the same’,” said Jaysukh Patel, managing director of Ajanta Group, which makes Oreva e-bikes.
